What's in a group? In addition to the One to One befriending we run several evening groups through the week. These groups provide a backdrop against which we encourage social engagement between the young people and the helpers and staff who support the groups. In keeping with the one to one befriending these groups participate in many activities: from designing t-shirts and baking cakes to playing board games and crafting our own art work which goes on display around our hub. When possible we go on outings with the groups which range from a walk around a park to a fun night of laser tag. We strive to give our young people an experience to remember and the tools to grow. |
The group dynamics Each group is run by a BeFriends member of staff with support from one of our volunteers to ensure each young person gets the support they need. The capacity for each group is eight young people at any time, This is to ensure that we can engage fully with each young person that attends while providing a comfortable social setting that is not overwhelming for the young people that come along. |
We have had some tremendous feedback regarding the experiences of the young people that attend our groups.
One mother expressed joy at seeing how lively her son is after each weekly session, she has gone on to comment that of the various groups she's tried out her son he always looks forward to coming to BeFriends and that his excitement makes her so incredibly happy.
There have been moments of heart warming organic growth between the young people that attend the groups, which have provided a space for sincere dialogue and the emergence of strong bonds between the young people because of it.
